ABOUT THE WORK + EVENT
Made within Chicago’s fringe performance scenes, choreographer Erin Kilmurray’s electric, femme-powered, world-building dance performance, the Function, takes shape for its very first month-long engagement. Originally premiering at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 2022, the piece will be restaged in Land and Sea Dept’s warehouse space.
Through genre-bending DIY stage craft, iterative, athletic movement, house-party energy, and bass-driven, sonic storytelling from DJ / sound designer VITIGRRL — the Function is a vibe.
Staged in a runway environment that gives audience members a front row seat, the work offers a playground of choreography and objects. A stellar cast of dancers actively design, create, operate, and destroy their own utopias; asking and imagining what is possible when we are empowered to envision and rebuild our environments, atmospheres, futures, and realities.

Venue / Event Expectations
What type of space is it and what are the facilities like?
This is not your typical performance space. This is a warehouse that is activated daily for a multitude of uses including offices, a wood shop, storage, and general fabrication. We are crafting a beautiful, DIY performance environment within it, and attending this event means that you are down to be there.
There is one, single-use bathroom available for use. You may have to wait to use it.
It is summer, and it may get warm. There are ceiling fans directly over audience seating areas.
Seating in general admission. Per the vibe of the show, seating is varied and informal: some chairs, some backless stools, etc. You are welcome to choose the seat and proximity to the performers that matches your comfort level. If during the show you need to move around, stand, or select a different available seat, you are welcome to.
The performers will be dancing very close to the audience, and will interact in low pressure, consented ways. Get into it.
Content Warning
Are there any potential sensory triggers or content advisories?
Expect loud sound/music and strobe lights. Earplugs will be available for those who would like to use them.
Minimal audience participation is involved and is optional.
Music contains crude language.
